Game Podunk’s 2009 Holiday Shopping Guide: PlayStation 3

As the holidays draw near, you might be dreading the search for the perfect game to get the gamer(s) on your list. Or maybe you are having a hard time deciding what game to ask for. Whichever the case, we know that the economy being in a slump can make it difficult to own all the latest titles that are must-play.

Playstation 3 owners have a few great games to choose from for the holidays even if the majority of games are multi-platform. Choosing one of them for the PS3 console might be dependent of many factors such as what consoles you own and how the game differs from console to console. Here is a list of the top five games that I recommend people to put on their list of either games to ask for or games to give.

1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – .99- The game that has over 24 reviews giving it a 10 out of 10, Uncharted 2 delivers on all of its promises. The graphics and gameplay are superb. The multiplayer features both competitive and cooperative modes. The multiplayer modes are online but not available offline. If you played the first and loved it, then Uncharted 2 will give you that much more to love.

2. Demon’s Souls – .99- While this game isn’t for everyone, those who do play it and enjoy it will tell you how brutal and unforgiving the game is. But that doesn’t stop them from trekking on. What is it about this game that makes gamers take a huge beating and still play on? It might just be the satisfaction of finally getting past that boss who killed you (and made you lose that stash of 200K souls) ten times in a row or possibly it’s the subliminal message From Software has programmed into the game: Play Demon’s Souls… Lose your soul. Ok, it isn’t that last one but from personal experience, I can say that it feels really good to take down a formidable foe (regular enemy or boss) after he stomps you into the ground.

3. Dragon Age: Origins – .99- BioWare’s latest RPG allows you to choose your character’s origin and changes the game world based on the good or evil choices you make throughout the game. These choices will also have effect on your party members’ feelings towards you; if they strongly disagree with your actions then there is a chance they will leave your party or even attack you. The dark mature story, beautiful graphics, and immense gameplay make this game perfect for any RPG fan.

4. God of War Collection – .99- Yes, this is just a rerelease of the two PS2 God of War games. But this collection offers a high definition remastered feel to it and trophies for those who love them. This would be the perfect opportunity to get into the series before the release of God of War 3 or a nice stroll down memory lane for those who played the PS2 originals.

5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – .99- This record breaking game is one the top of every FPS fan’s list and for good reason. Whether you prefer to go solo or with a friend, the game has plenty of fun to offer. Single-player mode on the Veteran difficulty can take around ten hours and is very realistic. Multi-player has all the basic modes (capture the flag, deathmatch, etc.) along with inventive ones such as the third-person mode. It also provides the gamer with Spec-Ops mode; where two players (locally or online)can spend many hours trying to get three stars on challenges for each stage.

My Honorable Mentions:

Assassin’s Creed 2
Borderlands
Brutal Legend
Tekken 6
Smackdown vs. Raw 2010
